New or Part Worn Tyres?
(4th April 2016)
Time to replace your car tyres? Of course, you are
interested in getting the very best deal; no one wants to
spend too much. Perhaps you’ve thought about buying
part worn or used tyres as a way to save some money.
In this short article we will answer two questions: 1) Are
part worn tyres safe? 2) Are part worn tyres cost
effective?
1) Are Part Worn Tyres Safe?
According to one estimate, 98% of part worn tyres are
sold illegally. In order for a dealer to sell part worn tyres,
all of the used tyres they sell must meet strict
requirements. That’s only natural, for two reasons.
Reason 1 is that the condition of your tyres is vital. We
can easily forget that our car tyres are the only thing
separating us and our passengers from the road. Reason
2 is that part worn tyres are second hand, a used
product. Therefore, it makes sense that the product must
meet strict standards.
All part worn tyres must be structurally sound, free of
large cuts, bulges or lumps. They must pass an inflation
test prior to sale, and all original tyre grooves must be
completely visible and be to a depth of at least 2mm
around the entire circumference. Finally, all part worn
tyres must clearly show the relevant ‘PART-WORN’ mark.
These are just a few of the specifications that must be
met.
If 98 percent of part worn tyres sold are illegal, can you
be sure that the ones that you buy are safe?
The safety and peace of mind of you and your
passengers are worth far more than you would
save by buying part worn tyres.
However, what about the cost? We know that your
budget is important too. That leads us to question 2:
2) Are Part Worn Tyres Cost Effective?
Naturally, buying a part worn tyre will cost you less
money than a brand new tyre. After all, you are buying a
second hand product. However, consider a few facts. A
new tyre has on average 8mm of tread, whereas a part
worn tyre may have half of that, or even less. (Remember,
its 2mm or more according to the law.)
It comes at no surprise that 8mm will last you a lot
longer than 4mm, not to mention 2mm. Therefore, if you
purchase part worn tyres, you may just have to replace
your tyres again very shortly, whereas brand new tyres
will no doubt last you much longer. So, in the long term,
buying new tyres will prove to be more cost effective. It is
better to pay a little extra to get a product which will
stand the test of time.
New or Part Worn?
The answer is simple. From a safety point of view, trust
brand new tyres from a reputable dealer. In the long run,
this will also save you more money than buying part
worn.
